The pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, yesterday, called on the Federal Government and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to address the high cost of living and the lingering oil crisis.

The group appealed during a caucus meeting in Akure home of its leader, Reuben Fasoranti. The charge was contained in the communiqué made available to The Guardian in Ibadan by the group’s Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi.

According to Ajayi, the meeting deliberated on issues affecting the organisation, Yorubaland and Nigeria as a whole. He said that issues discussed were the state of the nation with particular reference to the socio-economic and security situations in the country, and restructuring, which Afenifere had been advocating for a long time as a means of achieving better living conditions for the people.

The communiqué reads in part: “The security architecture of the country needs to be overhauled to ensure that Nigerians are able to live and move about without the fear of being kidnapped or harassed in any way. Such reworking should include accelerating actions on the decision of the government to have state police.

”There is also the urgent need to deploy modern technology more comprehensively into the efforts of combating banditry and terrorism. Doing so would stop, if not totally, the incidences of kidnapping and sundry banditry now ravaging the land.

“Afenifere also advocates for the licensing of Amotekun Corps to carry lethal weapons, greater cooperation between Amotekun and other security agencies, as well as installation of command and control posts across all local councils.

Meanwhile, Fasoranti, who congratulated members of the newly constituted working committee, urged them to ensure that they move Afenifere and Yorubaland positively forward. He also charged members to be more committed to the noble ideals that the organisation stands for and project them in their states.
