“I wake up tired, I sleep tired, and even inside my dreams, I’m working.” These were the words of Chima, a 32-year-old banker in Lagos, who barely has time to rest.

“Sometimes, I don’t even remember the last time I had a full day off without emails or calls from work, she told Guardian Life.

For Tolu, a business owner, it’s the same struggle. “I’m always on the move, meeting clients, handling orders, managing staff. If I slow down, I lose money. But at the same time, I feel like my body is telling me to stop.”
Now that everyone is constantly chasing success, it’s easy to forget that the body has limits. The economy is tough, work is demanding, and responsibilities are endless. But no matter how hard you push, if you don’t take a break, your body will force you to. The truth is, you can’t pour from an empty cup.

Here are five simple ways to slow down and recharge before stress takes over:

1. Connect with real people, not just your phone

Technology has made life easier, but it has also turned many into digital zombies. From endless scrolling on social media to responding to work messages at odd hours, people hardly take time to connect with those around them.
Try putting your phone down sometimes. Have real conversations, laugh with friends, and enjoy moments without distractions. Your mental health will thank you. Work, social media, and emails will always be there when you return.

2. Slow down, life is not a race

Slow down, life is not a race

Rushing through life only makes things more stressful. Whether it’s eating, talking, or working, doing everything too fast leads to exhaustion. Take things one step at a time. Enjoy your meals, breathe deeply, and allow yourself to move at a comfortable pace.

3. Learn to say no

Not every opportunity is worth your peace of mind. Many people struggle with saying “no” and end up overwhelmed. Understand that you can’t do everything at once. Some tasks can wait, some meetings can be rescheduled, and some responsibilities can be shared. Protect your energy.

4. Prioritise what really matters

Trying to do everything will only drain you. Instead, focus on what’s most important. Your health should always come first, eat well, get enough rest, and exercise. Work will always be there, but if you break down, everything else will pause.

5. Make time for enjoyment

Life is not just about work. Take time to relax and enjoy yourself. Plan a game night with friends, watch a movie, or go for a walk. Small moments of fun can make a big difference in reducing stress.
At the end of the day, balance is key. Work hard, but don’t let work control your life. Slow down now before stress forces you to.
