Paris Olympics: ‘Nigerian nightmare’ Favour Ashe hits Germany camp after visa hitches

Team Nigeria’s training camp in Germany came alive, on Friday morning, with the arrival of America-based sprinter, Favour Ashe, after he overcame hitches in his traveling documents.

Ashe, who is nicknamed ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ became the fastest man in 2024 after blazing to a Paris Olympics qualifying standard at the Florida Relays, where he ran the world’s fastest time and the first sub-10s with a brilliant 9.99s (0.7) to win the men’s collegiate 100m event.

Ashe became the first runner to break the sub-10s mark in 2024, and his eye-catching performance has been the talk of town since then with officials of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) banking on him for medals in Paris.

The President of AFN told The Guardian that Ashe could not travel with the rest of his colleagues earlier in the week because of an ‘error’ in his travelling document. “He has finally joined them in Germany after the error was corrected and we are happy about that.” Ashe and a few other athletes were said to have arrived the Germany training camp at about 5:00am on Friday.

The Guardian recalls that Ashe went through a setback towards the end of the indoor season before hitting his highly impressive mark in his first outdoor race of the season. More intriguing is that the 21-year-old’s time is just 0.03s short of his lifetime best of 9.96s and surpassed the Olympic qualifying standard of 10.00s.

At the Paris Olympics, Ashe will compete in the 100m and will be part of Nigeria’s 4x100m relay team alongside Godson Brume, Alaba Akintola, Usheoritse Itsekiri and Israel Okon.
