Sweetland Productions and Phos Productions have released two highly anticipated short films, each offering a profound exploration of pressing social issues. Both films, funded by the British Council, showcase the remarkable talents of Peace Shalom Monday and Nnani Akah.

Monday and Akah are recipients of Film Lab Africa grant recipients, a pioneering accelerator programme initiated by the British Council, dedicated to empowering budding filmmakers and TV producers in Nigeria.

This initiative offers a robust framework of support, encompassing skill development, knowledge enrichment, and networking opportunities. By delving into areas like mobile phone cinematography, short film production, industry entrepreneurship, and script refinement, Film Lab Africa equips participants with the essential tools to thrive in the dynamic world of film and television.

This three-year programme has already yielded impressive results, with the recent unveiling of
10 short films that showcase the vibrant talent and diverse narratives of Nigeria’s emerging filmmakers. Through rigorous training, funding, and mentorship, Film lab Africa is not only shaping the future of Nigerian cinema but also positioning the country as a global powerhouse of creativity

She Sees, produced and directed by Akah, tells the story of Rinu, a bright and determined blind girl, as she navigates her life through heightened senses and grapples with deep-seated trauma.

Her private confession, which leaks to the community, disrupts the fragile balance, leading to divisions between supporters and detractors. Rinu’s courage to confront her past forges new alliances but also breeds unexpected enemies.

“Between 2020 and 2023, there were more than 27,500 reported sexual violence and gender based violence cases. Within that period, we had less than 50 convicted cases. Why is rape so rampant?

I think it is because it has a healthy environment to thrive. What cultural beliefs, economic motivations and personal biases do we as a people have that allows this to thrive? Why don’t we have laws protecting the woman and the girl child? The problem is rape culture: Creating ‘She Sees’ has been a transformative experience. This is a heartfelt tribute to women who have had to develop a 6th sense majorly because they are preyed upon. To every woman who got raped and was blamed, to every woman who got raped and was shamed into silence, to every woman who didn’t get the support she needed from the ones she loved and from her community, this film is for you. To those who fight for the rights of women and speak up for the survivors, this is also for you,” Akah asks.

The film features Bolu Essien (Rinu), Ronke Oshodi (Mama Tobi), Olumide Joseph (Kassim), Jacinta Ocansey (Mummy Eno), and a special appearance by Beauty Tukura. The production team includes Joseph Oladunjoye (Director of Photography), Isaac Akinbinu (Editor) and Victoria Charles (Costume Designer).

In Rage, produced by Monday, a tricycle rider’s explosive anger over a trivial dispute leads to a tragic outcome, exposing the destructive consequences of unchecked fury. Rage follows Soji, a tricycle rider in bustling Lagos, who picks up a passenger named Mark. A minor fare disagreement escalates into a violent confrontation, culminating in Mark’s untimely death.

As Soji discovers a doctor’s diagnosis in Mark’s belongings, he is haunted by the regret and the deeper implications of his actions.
“Rage is conceived as a visceral and immersive experience, drawing the audience into the bustling streets of Lagos and the intimate confines of Soji’s tricycle. My vision for this film is to leverage skilled cinematography, dynamic performances, and authentic storytelling to capture the raw emotions and complex dynamics between the characters”, says Peace Shalom

The film stars Ibrahim Amokun as Soji, Steve Asinobi as John Igolo, and Bunmi Awolowo as Caro. The production team includes Paul Olasode Richie (Director of Photography), Iwu Promise (Sound Specialist), and Oladipo O Fresh (Technical Director).
