In Untitled Miami Art Exhibition, Avoseh paints different strokes of self

For Sejiro Avoseh it is not enough to barely think, in order to get a profound experience of life; one must revolte in all aspects of perception, challenging the norm and basking in the luminosity of reality’s shadows.

In his forthcoming untitled exhibition at the Untitled Miami Art Fair, in the United States, in conjunction with the Jupiter Contemporary Art Gallery, Avoseh pursues this thought process with the zest of seven nerve-racking paintings.

Avoseh’s pieces, a usual mesh of abstraction, figuratives and collages, serve as sharp social commentary with his forthcoming exhibition microscoping on the individuality of perception and its role in tolerance and appreciation of the collective human experience.

Over the years, he found and formed a distinct style, drawing inspiration from within and admiring works from Francis Bacon, George Condo, Goya, Basquiat, and Picasso. And with each new exhibition, Avoseh strikes artistic gold, forming tapestries of thought on the marginalised observation of the world around us.

In this chat with Guardian, Avoseh delves deep, breaking down his creative muses, as well as offering a glance into his relentless artistic evolution.

What inspired this solo show?
The art exhibition at hand draws inspiration from a multiplicity of profound themes, notably the concept of displacement, the pervasive corruption and instability witnessed in one’s home country, and the consequential challenges faced by migrants as policies and attitudes perpetually shift. My creative life also evolved from the unwavering determination to endure amidst adversity, whilst finding solace through the love of my family and the therapeutic process of artistic expression.

In synthesized reflection, my recent body of work encapsulates a heightened sense of intuition and perceptiveness. This intentional approach empowers the artwork to establish an intimate connection with viewers. The visual landscape of my creations exudes a resplendent vibrancy, evoking fervent emotions and stimulating profound sensory engagement.

Conceptually, I strive to unravel the intricate tapestry of lived experiences, exploring the multifaceted aspects of displacement, home country turmoil, and the resilience of the human spirit. By delving into these thematic depths, I aim to create a broader conversation surrounding the universal human experience and ignite empathetic understanding.

In what way does this differ from previous projects?
In my recent artistic evolution, a notable departure from my earlier works is discernible. I have delved into a realm characterized by heightened abstraction, vivid chromatic palettes, and an overall air of openness. This shift in creative direction is marked by a more intuitive and perceptive approach, one deeply intertwined with the intimate echoes of my familial experiences.

Inspired by the dynamics and intricacies of my familial relationships, these recent paintings reflect a distillation of personal narratives and emotions. By employing a fragmented aesthetic, I ignite a visual rebellion that defies conventional norms and expectations. Through the strategic and deliberate utilisation of colours, I visually display a sense of autonomy, liberation, and defiance.

The process through which these works come into being is deeply intuitive. As I engage with my chosen medium, I am guided by an innate and heartfelt responsiveness, allowing the brushstrokes to forge an unspoken dialogue between the canvas and my innermost thoughts.
