Delta State athletes and officials have showered praises on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori following his cash reward on the state’s contingent to the 2023 National Youth Games (NYG).

The athletes, their coaches, organizing secretaries and officials of the state sports commission are full of gratitude to the Governor for recognising the exceptional performance of the young stars.

The seventh edition of the Youth Games, hosted by Delta State in 2023, saw Team Delta triumph by securing the top spot on the medals table, a continuation of their legacy of excellence since the inception of the youth Games.

In line with the government’s commitment to fostering athletic excellence, the governor’s gesture serves as both a reward and an encouragement for future achievements.

Director General of the Delta State Sports Commission, Mr. Festus Ohwojero, told The Guardian, on Friday, that virtually all beneficiaries have received their monetary rewards.

“A majority of the athletes have received their money except a few who are having some problem with their bank account. Some of the young athletes don’t even have bank account. The Commission has directed such people to bring the account details of their parents for us to pay the money,” he stated.

Ohwojero expressed gratitude to Governor Oborevwori, highlighting that this financial recognition would serve as a significant motivation for the athletes as they prepare for the eighth edition of the NYG from September 10 to 20, 2024.

At the end of the 2023 edition of the Games, Delta State entered an agreement with the Sports Ministry to host the Games till 2026. The state is set to host the 2024 edition.

Ohwojero revealed to The Guardian that the continuous support and acknowledgment from Governor Oborevwori underscores Delta’s unwavering commitment to nurturing and celebrating young athletic talent, ensuring that the state remains a powerhouse in the realm of youth sports in Nigeria.

The Guardian recalls that Team Delta won all past editions of the National Youth Games held in Abuja and Ilorin, Kwara State since 2015.
