Prominent activist and convener of the #RevolutionNow protest, Omoyele Sowore, has been arrested.

Sowore was arrested on Sunday at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, shortly after arriving in Nigeria. His arrest was confirmed to The Guardian by Concerned Nigerians founder and activist, Comrade Deji Adeyanju.

Adeyanju said, “SOWORE was arrested by the jobless and lawless Nigerian government for calling for an End to Bad Governance protest,” he said.

It will be recalled that Sowore last Thursday revealed that the Nigerian security forces were attempting to track him down in his hometown in Kiribo, the Ese-Odo Local Council Area in Ondo State.

He had disclosed this via his verified Facebook page on Saturday. Sowore wrote, “Yeah! All around in my hometown, they’re tryin’ to track me down, yeah! They say they want to bring me in guilty.

“However Babylon must fall! #FearlessInOctober.”

Recall also that the Department of State Services (DSS) had recently upgraded Sowore’s status and name on its “watchlist”.

In a correspondence dated August 16, 2024, and signed by Adeola Ali, the DSS had ordered operatives to arrest Sowore upon his arrival in the country.

It read, “I am directed to inform you that the DSSDG has approved the upgrading of Watchlist B ( Report arrival and destination by telephone immediately ) to Watchlist F (Detain traveller and escort with baggage to National Headquarters. Vide DSE: 9A/6201 against Omoyele Sowore, an activist and founder of Sahara Reporters. This is for your strict compliance. “
