The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) has charged its newly conferred fellows to be advocates for a robust and equitable tax system that can serve as a pillar of the nation’s economic growth and sustainability.
The institute equally charged them that as leaders that they have become, they must always uphold the principles of accountability, transparency, and professionalism in the taxation system in Nigeria.
President and Chairman of Council, CITN, Samuel Agbeluyi said this at the institute’s 2024 Fellow Conferment in Lagos, where he drew their attention to the series of ongoing reforms in the taxation landscape and urged them to take interest by studying the proposed bills and make contributions to ensure its success.
On the proposed Economic Stabilisation Bill, Agbeluyi said he was hopeful that the government would give due consideration to the institute’s recommendations in the way professionalism in tax administration is being construed.
While congratulating the new fellows, the CITN boss urged them on ethical conduct and always striving for excellence, adding that contribution to critical taxation and fiscal policy issues would be relied on by the council.
In his keynote address, Professor of Accounting and Taxation, Nasarawa State University, Muhammad Mainoma, highlighted seven basic issues for a prosperous institute using the acronym FELLOWS.
He said for F, members should consider the future of the profession for sustainability, even as they show their professional expertise.
He said the Ls stand for the legacy they want to leave behind for the profession and leadership they can provide.
The don said O stands for the opportunities they can create for members of the profession and nation at large, while W stands for them to be worthy ambassadors and S as service providers that are going to contribute to the development of the nation.
