12 die in auto accident on Ilorin-Jebba expressway
No fewer than 12 people were killed and several others injured in a tragic auto crash on the Oko Olowo axis of the Ilorin-Jebba Expressway in Kwara State.
The accident, which occurred around 5:35 pm on Wednesday, involved a trailer with registration number AYE 218 XC and a Canter truck with registration number TTN 556 XA.
Eyewitnesses reported that one of the vehicles was transporting cows and passengers from Ilorin to Ogbomoso, while the trailer was en route from Lagos to Kano.
Emergency responders, including police and officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), from the ‘G’ Division Command in Oloje quickly arrived at the scene to manage the situation and transport the injured to a nearby hospital. The bodies of the deceased were handed over to their families.
While the cause of the accident is still under investigation, reckless driving and excessive speeding are believed to have played a role. A video from the scene showed the trailer overturned and no fewer than 10 bodies scattered on the road.
A senior FRSC officer stated that 15 people died in the crash, with three others were injured.
However, the FRSC Sector Commander in Kwara, Muftau Irekeola, said he is awaiting further details from his team in Olooru.
