CP orders investigation into man’s death at station

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested six armed robbery suspects and recovered firearms and other exhibits in Nsukka. Spokesperson for the command, SP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the development in a statement yesterday, stating that operatives from the Nsukka Area Command, in collaboration with the Neighbourhood Watch Group, initially detained a robbery suspect, leading to the arrest of three others.

Recovered items include three locally-made pistols, a revolver, two live cartridges, three motorcycles allegedly stolen from victims, substances suspected to be Indian hemp, and plastic bottles used for consuming methamphetamine, known locally as Mkpụrụ Mmiri.

Ndukwe added that one of the suspects led the police to Obollo-Afor in Udenu Local Council, where individuals suspected of receiving stolen motorcycles were apprehended on February 6.

Meanwhile, Ndukwe addressed the sudden death of Mr Ugwu Nnaemeka, who collapsed while visiting the Nsukka Area Command Headquarters on February 7 to secure the release of his wife, Mrs Ngozi Nnaemeka.

“Mr Nnaemeka was immediately rushed to the hospital but was later confirmed dead by the attending doctor. His remains have been deposited for preservation and autopsy,” Ndukwe said.

The police spokesperson dismissed media allegations that the deceased was arrested, harassed, or tortured in custody, emphasising that Mr Nnaemeka was neither detained nor mistreated.

The state’s Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, extended condolences to the deceased’s family and directed the Deputy Commissioner of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
