Shippers Council recommits to enhance port efficiency, global competitiveness
The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has reiterated its commitment to enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of the nation’s ports to boost international trade.
The Executive Secretary/ Chief Executive Officer of NSC, Pius Akutah, made this statement during a courtesy visit of the Global Chief Executive Officer of PIL Shipping, Lars Kastrup and his team to the NSC headquarters in Lagos.
Akutah praised PIL Shipping for establishing Nigeria as an investment hub and providing logistics solutions, which will benefit both the company and the country.
He encouraged the shipping company to leverage the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in their Nigerian operations. Akutah highlighted the Council’s efforts in developing Inland Dry Ports to bring shipping services closer to the hinterlands, acknowledging PIL Shipping’s significant role in providing inland logistics for cargo movement.
Regarding container indemnity, Akutah stated that the NSC is working towards establishing a container regime to facilitate seamless trade. Kastrup expressed gratitude for the NSC’s support and the robust relationship between the two organisations.
He emphasised PIL Shipping’s commitment to promoting Nigerian exports globally and announced plans to train staff in Nigeria, with a potential extension to NSC staff.
The Regional Managing Director of PIL Shipping, Ghana, Kelvin Taylor, urged Nigeria to diversify its economy and encourage export growth, commending the government’s economic reform programme for its positive impact. He said this collaboration between NSC and PIL Shipping is expected to enhance Nigeria’s maritime sector and boost economic growth.
