Death toll rises to five in Lagos building collapse

Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has revealed that the death toll in Arowojobe Estate building collapsed has increased to five, from the earlier three recorded.

In a statement earlier on Thursday, the Permanent Secretary, LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency responded to the above incident and discovered that a set of three terraces under construction had collapsed.

“Search and rescue operations began immediately. Three adult males were recovered dead, two male adults were rescued alive, and one adult male trapped under the rubble was rescued alive by the LASEMA and the Lagos State Fire service.”

Providing an update around 11 am on Thursday, LASEMA said two more dead bodies were recovered from the scene, stating that the total number of dead is now five adult males, just as rescued persons are also five.

The agency said that all five fatalities have been handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, SEHMU, for further processing.

It added that search and rescue operation is still ongoing to ground zero.
