Essential Tattoo Aftercare Tips To Preserve Your Ink

So you finally got that tattoo you’ve always wanted. The excitement is real, but the work isn’t over yet. Proper aftercare is essential for ensuring your new ink looks its best and lasts for years to come.

Here’s a breakdown of what you need to do to keep your new body art looking healthy.

In the first few hours after getting tatted, you may notice some fluid coming out of the tattooed area. This is completely normal – it’s a mix of blood plasma and excess tattoo ink being expelled from the skin. The area will likely be red, sore, and swollen as well.

1. Before you leave the tattoo shop, your tattoo artist should cover the fresh tattoo with a bandage or wrap. Leave this on for the recommended time, typically 24 hours. When it’s time to remove the bandage, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly before taking it off.

2. Gently wash the tattooed area with a mild, fragrance-free antibacterial soap and warm water. Pat it dry with a clean towel. Then apply a thin layer of fragrance-free ointment or a tattoo aftercare product, as recommended by your artist. Do not put the bandage back on.

3. Don’t use scrubs, loofahs, sponges, or any exfoliating product on the tattoos. This can irritate the already delicate skin.

4. For the next 2-4 weeks, follow this gentle wash, rinse, and moisturise routine 1-2 times per day. You should also avoid over-moisturising. A thin layer is all you need. Steer clear of petroleum-based products like Vaseline, as they can interfere with the healing process.

Additional tips

1. Do not itch

It may be tempting to itch, peel, or pick at the tattooed area as it begins to scab and flake. But resist the urge at all costs. Scratching can lead to bacterial infection and cause your ink to fade prematurely.

2. Avoid sun exposure

Similarly, completely avoid direct sunlight exposure on the tatted area. Do this for at least two weeks. Sun exposure can make the colours fade and irritate the healing skin. After that, always apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher whenever the tattooed area is exposed.

3. Wear loose clothes

During the healing process, wear loose and breathable clothing over the tatted area. This lessens friction and allows the skin to breathe.

4. Shower with warm or cool water

Avoid showering with hot water during your tattoo’s healing process. Instead, shower with warm or cool water. The cool water shouldn’t be icy cold as well, ensure moderation is maintained.

5. Apply fragrance-free products

Even after your tattoo seems to have healed, you should still maintain a daily moisturising routine. This will help preserve the look of your ink for years to come. Sun protection is also important for the long-term health of your tattoo. Apply sunscreen consistently, it will keep your tattoo from fading.

When to see a doctor

While it is normal for the tattooed area of your skin to be irritated and swollen, keep an eye out for signs that might indicate an infection. This can look like:

• Extreme puffiness or swelling that gets worse over time
• Redness that goes beyond the tattooed area
• Thick yellow, green pus coming out of the tattoo
• Fever and excessive pain

If you experience any or all of these symptoms, it is best to consult with a trusted doctor immediately.

Tattoo aftercare is just as important as the tattoo itself. So take care of your new ink and you’ll thank yourself in years to come.
