“Accelerate Action”: Abi LGA champions women’s empowerment with financial aid and vocational support
In a dazzling celebration of women’s transformative contributions to society, the Executive Chairman of Abi Local Government Area, Hon. Egbala Bassey, alongside his wife, Mrs. Eka Egbala Bassey, on March 8, 2025, led a remarkable commemoration of International Women’s Day 2025. Held at the Abi Local Government Secretariat in Itigidi, the event carried the theme “Accelerate Action,” shining a spotlight on the vital role women play in driving community progress and societal change.
The celebration which had a vast assembly of women dressed in vibrant and colourful attires that symbolizes strength and ressilience began with a heartfelt address from Mrs. Eka Egbala Bassey, the First Lady of Abi LGA, who spoke on behalf of the First Lady of Cross River State, Her Excellency, Bishop Dr. Eyoanwan Bassey Otu. Mrs. Bassey lauded the resilience and dedication of the women in Abi, urging them to embrace entrepreneurship and skill development as means to attain financial independence. She emphasized the transformative potential of women in both their homes and communities, encouraging proactive participation in productive ventures.
Hon. Egbala Bassey, in his keynote speech, stressed the global significance of International Women’s Day, describing women as “a divine gift to humanity.” Reflecting on the theme “Accelerate Action,” he called for an immediate and concerted effort to empower women, providing them with the tools and opportunities necessary for meaningful contributions to community development.
He also stressed that his administration’s policies are rooted in women’s empowerment, highlighting that the 2025 budget prioritizes initiatives aimed at financial support, vocational training, and other capacity-building programs to foster economic self-reliance.
With passion, Hon. Bassey reminded the women that they are central to the stability and success of their homes, urging them to recognize and harness their inherent power to shape the future of the community. He assured them that his administration remains steadfast in its commitment to creating an environment in which women can thrive in every aspect of life.
The event saw the participation of several prominent dignitaries, including the Vice Chairman of the Council, Hon. Joseph Ukata, the Council Secretary, Dr. Jeremiah Ani, and female Supervisors, namely Mrs. Joy Soniwa Ekom (Supervisor for Finance) and Mrs. Blessing Edwin (Supervisor for Health), 8th ABI Legislative Council, Key appointees of the Council, such as the Special Adviser on Women Affairs, also contributed to the occasion, signaling the collective commitment to women’s empowerment.
A particularly moving highlight of the day was the empowerment of over 500 women, including market traders and persons with disabilities. The beneficiaries received much-needed financial assistance, food supplies such as rice and beans, as well as essential items like clothing and materials to support their businesses and improve their livelihoods. This tangible support reflects the administration’s steadfast commitment to enhancing the socio-economic well-being of women within the LGA.
