Rename Livestock Ministry, Northern group urges Tinubu
The Growth and Development of Northern Nigeria (GDNN) has appealed to the Federal Government to rename the Ministry of Livestock Development for efficiency.
The public acting secretary of the group, Haruna Buhari, said the name change became necessary since the ministry’s current name fell short of integrating dairy development.
Buhari made this statement in Abuja, the nation’s capital, on Wednesday at a conference.
The establishment of the ministry, according to him, is a welcome development that is important to the nation.
“We welcome with anxiety and commend the Federal Government on the creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development.
“We, however, note that it fell short of integrating dairy development to make it complete, comprehensive, and most effective,” he said.
He proposed that the government should scale up the ministry’s objectives and rename it ‘Ministry of Livestock and Dairy Development.’
There have been challenging issues over the movement of cattle across the country in recent periods, which has led to deaths, the destruction of property, and other issues.
The establishment of a livestock ministry has helped to reduce the incidence of farmer/herder clashes.
It is estimated that Lagos State alone consumes about 1.8 million beef cattle per day, while the rest of the country consumes about 1.5 million metric tonnes of beef annually.
