The Centre for Digital Humanities (CEDHUL), University of Lagos (UNILAG), has empowered students with digital tools needed for effective research.

The Centre for Digital Humanities (CEDHUL), University of Lagos (UNILAG), has empowered students with digital tools needed for effective research.

The three-day conference, themed: “Exploring opportunities and possibilities in digital humanities and culture,” had participants from Nigeria, South Africa and other parts of the world.

Director, CEDHUL, Prof. Tunde Ope-Davies, said the conference was organised to address lack of skills and knowledge in digital competence among scholars in humanities.

He added that the event was aimed at equipping students with skills needed to carry out research, and become competent in the use of digital tools for national development.

The university teacher noted that embracing technology would give students the skill to promote social benefit and transformation.

He said: “This is the first centre in Nigeria and Africa as a whole, which not only puts UNILAG in the forefront, but also enhances the global ranking of the university and its contribution to the society.”

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, said the institution is particularly interested in the conference because it has, in the last couple of decades, being moving towards becoming a research-intensive university.

Ogunsola noted that digital humanities may form the nexus between technology and knowledge advancement.

Managing Director, Intermac Consulting, Adeyinka Adeyemi, who was the guest of honour, said the world is now in the digital era, and every sector is expected to acquire digital skills and tools needed to be relevant in the 21st century.
