In a surprising turn of events, Dr Kennedy Swaratsingh, the former Member of Parliament for People’s National Movement, has extended his support to Kamla Persad-Bissessar, the leader of the opposition United National Congress (UNC) as the country heads towards the 2025 general elections.

The elections in Trinidad and Tobago are set to take place on 28th April, and Swaratsingh’s support towards Persad-Bissessar is a significant shift in the political landscape of the country.

The former MP made this shaking statement on Thursday, during a Town Hall meet held by UNC among thousands of attendees who gathered to hear the party’s plan ahead of the elections.

Swaratsingh’s shift towards UNC is another shock for netizens and PNM alike as many other high-profile politicians have made a similar political shift during the time of election. These names include Wendy Lewis, the former Protocol Officer, and Phillip Watts, the former constituency executive member and campaign manager.

During the same town hall meet, the leader of UNC, Kamla Persad-Bissessar highlighted the party’s plan for the economic revival of Trinidad and Tobago emphasizing on a wide range of issues including. These include lowering corporate taxes, no property tax, no increase in utility prices, double taxation agreements with south America, West Africa and other commonwealth countries, mandating Spanish as a second language, enhancing CARICOM trade agreements, a special ministry to focus on artificial intelligence, the digital economy and technology, and many other.

Kamla Persad-Bissessar during her address also outlined that the UNC has a history of delivering results stating, “We did it before, and we will do it again.”

She highlighted that under her tenure, they were able to create 55,000 new jobs, able to secure highest levels of national savings and wealth in T&T’s history, and significant increase in foreign and local investment.
