Director of People position with the African Medical Centre of Excellence in partnership with King’s College Hospital London – in Abuja, Nigeria
Are you looking for a new, exciting and challenging opportunity to expand your portfolio of expertise? We would like to invite an experienced Director of People to lead our Human Resources function at our groundbreaking healthcare facility in Nigeria, West Africa!
African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) commenced the construction of its African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) project in Abuja, Nigeria. It will provide excellent healthcare to both low and high-income patient groups across the continent. The AMCE in Partnership with King’s College Hospital London will be located in Abuja, which is a hub for travel in Nigeria and West Africa, enabling it to attract patients across the region. The Centre will be starting with a 170-bed specialist hospital before expanding to a 500-bed facility.
The centre will have the potential to provide services to over 200,000 patients in Nigeria and a further 150,000 patients from neighbouring West African countries within its first five years of operation.
The clinical areas the centre will specialise in are Cardiology, Haematology and Oncology. A range of businesses providing relevant health support will support this facility and provide commercial services to its patients and staff, thus creating a healthcare ecosystem sustainably designed to deliver long-term value to its community and region.
This is an outstanding initiative and creates a unique opportunity to be involved in the opening chapter of this exciting project that is set to make a decisive impact on non-communicable disease care across Nigeria and West Africa. The AMCE will benefit millions of people in Abuja and over the wider regions of West Africa. The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for a proven Director of People that will be able to provide a clear HR plan for the entire workforce whilst empowering through an exceptional level of leadership service in both a strategic and operational function to the project.
- Have extensive experience in HR business practices and the effective management of employees.
- Have in-depth knowledge and acumen of recruitment practices, CPD as well as achievement and review of the people strategy and objectives.
- Have prior set up management experience.
- Have previously initiated a strong learning and development culture and leading on workforce development opportunities throughout the business.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Will lead the team by setting any performance related targets, supporting, coaching and development and providing high quality HR functions to the business.
- Ensuring that HR systems and processes within the project are fully functioning and achieving maximum efficiency and quality.
- Ensure correct governances arrangements, which include the management of finance and regulatory activity where appropriate.
- Making sure that all HR functions comply with the governance standards
- Act as lead for Equality & Diversity in the HR department to ensure the development and effective implementation of a strategy, set of policies, procedures and monitoring and control systems are in place.
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree or equivalent in relevant experience (Human Resources)
- Chartered status within CIPD or other globally recognised accreditation (Level 7 CIPD ideally).
- Evidence of commitment to continuing professional development.
- Successful proven experience as a Director of HR.

Job Summary
The Director of People will be able to provide a clear HR plan for the team whilst empowering through an exceptional level of leadership service in both a strategic and operational function to the project. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the continuous development, achievement and review of the people strategy and objectives.
The post holder will be expected to lead the HR team on a number of HR topics that include complex employee relations, any HR project work and keeping up to date with any HR policy/ legislation issues within the project whilst making any necessary changes to the current policies.
You will work closely with external and internal stakeholders to ensure that the HR policies and process are aligned with the needs of the organisation in an effective manner.
This role requires extensive experience in HR business practices and the effective management of employees. You will be able to communicate with the relevant bodies to ensure that medium to long term HR strategies can be implemented to meet the future needs of the business whilst taking into account the projects culture and values. It is vital that the successful candidate has the ability to communicate clearly and interpret HR policies, benefits and processes to employees of varying levels of education and experience. As the Director of People, it is your role to ensure that you lead the delivery of communication to the whole workforce across the organisation. This could be in regards to any updates to the organisation’s and personal policies. For this reason, it is essential that these policies are clear and concise to all members of the workforce regardless of their level, to negate any potential problems that this may cause going forward as an organisation.
As the Director of People, it is essential that any issues / concerns that the employees may have within the organisation are addressed to the board. However, It is also imperative that the ideal candidate is able to maintain a balance between being an advocate for any staff issues, whilst also taking into account the overall objectives of the organisation and senior board members, making sure that these are not affected. You will have extensive experience of successfully engaging with stakeholders of all levels making sure that any issues, concerns or feedback from a workforce within an organisation were brought forward to senior board members. Therefore, it is essential that the ideal candidate is someone that is a good listener and able to clearly communicate the overall feelings of the workforce to senior members, in a clear and structured manner with the view to implement change.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership:
- You will lead the team by setting any performance related targets, supporting relevant coaching and development and providing high quality HR functions to the business.
- You will be at the forefront of the HR team and be responsible for any outstanding issues related to the HR functions of the project.
- Initiate a strong learning and development culture, aiming to lead on workforce development opportunities throughout the business. Thismay include setting up management/ leadership programs and providing the workforce with any further qualifications.
Strategic Development
- Responsible for leading the strategic and operational planning of the HR function of the project.
- To ensure that HR systems and processes within the project are fully functioning and achieving maximum efficiency and quality.
- Instil fairness and implement employee advocacy pathways.
Governance
- Ensure correct governances arrangements, which include the management of finance and regulatory activity where appropriate.
- Making sure that all HR functions comply with the governance standards
- Ensuring that all HR functions / processes follow the correct guidelines from a governance perspective.
