In an expeditious legislative action on Wednesday, the Senate passed a bill for the first and second readings, seeking the establishment of the Federal University of Agriculture and Tropical Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State, under one hour.

The bill, which is an Executive Bill, was introduced by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele. After scaling its first reading along with five other bills, it quickly proceeded to the second reading.

During the lead debate, Senator Bamidele emphasized the importance of the proposed institution, stating that it would address the educational needs of the populace while serving as a training ground for agricultural development in Nigeria.

“Agriculture and its allied sectors are undeniably the largest livelihood providers, especially in rural areas, and can significantly contribute to the GDP,” Bamidele noted.

He further explained that the university would focus on the holistic development of agriculture and tropical studies, equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed to accelerate agricultural growth, enhance farmers’ income, and generate employment in the sector.
