GIC empowers students through career counselling
Towards inspiring and guiding Muslim students on various professions and career opportunities, the Glorious Islamic Centre (GIC) has equipped students with the basic knowledge needed to choose the right career.
Speaking at the group’s yearly career day, the President, Akin Laguda, said the programme was aimed at introducing students to different career opportunities, instead of providing traditional career counselling.
Laguda emphasised the importance of exposing students to a wide range of possibilities before making critical decisions regarding their future educational paths.
He said: “We are concerned about how to educate our students on the various opportunities in the outside world. The career day programme has helped in exposing them to such opportunities.
This year’s event featured speakers who shared their experiences in diverse fields. One delved into the world of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), shedding light on the numerous opportunities within the industry. Another speaker discussed the field of insurance, enlightening students about its significance and various career pathways within the sector.
Over the years, the GIC Career Day has covered medicine, engineering, agriculture, and other professions, helping students to fully explore their options.
He stressed the need to empower Muslim students to become valuable contributors not only to themselves, but also to the society.
He disclosed that the centre’s primary focus is on education and social matters, while ensuring that individuals are enlightened and have the necessary knowledge to thrive personally, contribute positively, and foster peace within the community and the nation.
Laguda tasked the students to embrace hardwork, while taking advantage of the various opportunities available.
One of the speakers, Taofeek Olatinwo, who is the Head of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company (NMRC), highlighted the vast opportunities available in IT for aspiring professionals.
He said with the discipline and versatility that comes with pursuing a career in IT, individuals could gain a deeper understanding of businesses and potentially perform better than those directly involved in the industry.
Olatinwo emphasised that the global direction has been towards IT, as it permeates across all sectors, and encourages students to hone their skills.
He advised the students to remain focused on what is right and to draw inspiration from their Islamic faith and teachings of the Qur’an.
