Kogi Poly rector charges new SUG excos on transparency, accountability
The Student Union Government (SUG) and the National Association of Kogi State Students (NAKOSS) of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, for the 2024/2025 academic session have been inaugurated.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held for the SUG and NAKOSS on Monday, 4th November 2024, at the 200 Twin Lecture Theatre of the Polytechnic’s main campus, the new executives were implored to uphold the values of their campaigns as true student unionism that will cater to the yearnings of students’ welfare.
The Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, Professor Salisu Usman, congratulated the new leadership of both the SUG and NAKOSS and charged them to lead by example, worthy of emulation, and to be remembered for good.
He advised the new student leadership against divisive approaches, as good governance has no colouration of religion or tribe.
Professor Usman, who also commended the electoral committee for conducting free, fair, and transparent polls, appreciated the candidates who conceded defeat for their spirit of sportsmanship and advised the winners to exemplify the attitude of good leaders by carrying them along.
He also warned the newly inaugurated executives of both SUG and NAKOSS against being used by mischief makers.
Professor Usman, however, assured the executives that his administration would continue to make the welfare and well-being of students a top priority.
Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Engr. Adamu Alaji, commended the students for their orderliness and appreciated the Polytechnic management and members of his committee for their support throughout the process.
In their separate remarks, the Dean of Student Services, Dr John Aliyu; the Chief Security Officer of the Polytechnic, Mr. Emmanuel Onuh; and the Director of Legal Services, Barrister Williams Ameh, advised the new executives to use their new roles to strengthen peaceful coexistence on campus, build on the successes of their predecessors, be on the side of the law always, and be good ambassadors of the institution.
The new President of SUG, Enimokanyi Janet, in her acceptance speech, appreciated her co-contestants for their spirit of sportsmanship and promised to be magnanimous in victory.
She assured the students that the SUG under her watch would raise the bar of student unionism to cater more for students, and she solicited the support of all.
Similarly, the newly inaugurated NAKOSS President, Abubakar Isah Sheriff, promised that his leadership would ensure that the indigenes of Kogi State at Kogi State Polytechnic are well represented.
Highlights of the inauguration included the administration of the oath of office to the new executives of both SUG and NAKOSS and the issuance of certificates of return.
