Gutted: Gov. Abba Yusuf

The Kano State government has said out of 10 million pupils in public primary and secondary schools in the state, about 4.5 million are presently receiving lessons while sitting on the bare floor.

The government has, however, said it requires over N60 billion to fix the situation that is leaving innocent students uncomfortable.

The state Commissioner of Education, Umar Haruna, disclosed the alarming condition in an interview with journalists.

He said the government was also worried that over 80 per cent of schools are presently not habitable for teaching and learning.

Haruna, who lamented the wrath in the education sector, however, accused the immediate past government of Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje of bequeathing near collapsed public schools in the state to the present administration.

According to Haruna, a significant number of boarding school students have been displaced since the closure of their schools, which are currently taken over by weeds and reptiles.

He accused Ganduje, who is the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), of destroying the legacy he inherited from his predecessor Rabiu Kwankwaso by closing down some schools, a situation he claimed was also responsible for the dilapidated state of the public schools in Kano.

The commissioner, however, commended the initiative of Governor Abba Yusuf on the state of emergency on education and enhanced budgetary allocation for education.

Haruna declared the present government’s readiness to revive the sector and make Kano a citadel of learning.

The commissioner added that plans are underway by the state government to implement the education policy, beginning with Government College Kano, through the provision of instructional materials and renovation of dilapidated infrastructure.
