Students in Ogun have commended Governor Dapo Abiodun over the state government’s plan to revamp the technical colleges in the state.

This is contained in a joint statement by the Chairman, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), and the National President, National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS), Gabriel Francis and Kehinde Thomas, respectively on Monday in Abeokuta.

The students described the move by Abiodun-led administration as a laudable step towards breathing a fresh air into the state-owned technical colleges.

The state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, had announced that work had commenced on the rehabilitation of technical colleges in the state.

The students posited that the move would increase enrolment into technical colleges and enable the students to compete favourably with their counterparts across the country.

They added that the rehabilitation of the structures would contribute effectively to the learning skills of students.

“The ongoing rehabilitation work and the upgrading of facilities would enhance practical learning, foster creativity and provide a conducive environment for academic excellence.

“The revamped technical colleges, apart from helping to attract more students to technical education, would also increase their employability and prepare them for entrepreneurial opportunities in various industries.

“NAOSS and NANS want to commend Gov. Dapo Abiodun, for his move to revamp technical colleges across the state,” they said.

According to the students, the plan is not only right, but timely, especially now that technical manpower and skills are in high demand.

“The students associations strongly believe that rehabilitation exercise would go a long way in boosting technical education towards producing a skilled workforce capable of meeting the demands of both local and international markets.

“It is also our belief that the intervention would strengthen the link between education and industry, ensuring students are equipped with relevant skills for today’s dynamic economy,” the students said.

They, however, urged the state government to enhance security around tertiary institutions in the state.
