FG appoints Prof. Olusegun Ojo as pioneer CMD of FUTA Teaching Hospital
The Federal Government has appointed Prof. Olusegun Sylvester Ojo as the pioneer Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the FUTA Teaching Hospital, Akure, Ondo State, effective March 5, 2025.
Until now, Akure was the only state capital in Nigeria without a tertiary hospital.
Announcing the appointment, along with those of five other Chief Medical Directors, President Tinubu’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, stated on Friday, February 28, that the appointments are for a four-year term, effective from the respective dates of assumption of office.
According to Onanuga, President Tinubu congratulated the newly appointed and reappointed Chief Medical Directors, urging them to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, accountability, and service delivery in their respective roles.
Presenting the appointment letter in Abuja on Thursday, March 13, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, also congratulated Prof. Ojo.
He urged him to ensure that the new teaching hospital fulfills the objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration while also addressing the training needs of the College of Health Sciences at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA).
Prior to his appointment, Ojo served as the Provost of the College of Health Sciences at FUTA.
A Professor of Pathology at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) College of Health Sciences, Ile-Ife, since 2001, he has also been a Consultant Histopathologist at the affiliated Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC) since 1990.
Ojo earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, in 1983.
He later completed his postgraduate residency training in pathology, obtaining the Fellowship of the Nigerian Postgraduate Medical College in Anatomical Pathology in 1989. He was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in 2021.
Since 1990, he has maintained a research and clinical focus on gastroenterology, specializing in liver diseases and disorders of the digestive tract.
He played a key role in establishing a collaborative network of researchers in this field across Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa, known as the Gastroenterological Society of Sub-Saharan Africa.
Additionally, Ojo has served as the President of the Society for Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Nigeria (SOGHIN) and the Africa-Middle East Association of Gastroenterology (AMAGE), a regional subsidiary of the World Gastroenterology Organization.
Currently, he serves as the Chairman of the Faculty of Pathology at the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
He has published extensively in international journals on gastroenterology and anatomical pathology.
He was the founding Editor-in-Chief of Annals of Tropical Pathology, the leading pathology journal in Africa. He is also the author of Essential Pathology for Clinical Students in the Tropics, a widely used undergraduate textbook on pathology.
