Phytochemicals are bioactive compounds in plants which confer beneficial effects.

Hemp has different groups of cannabidiol which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, it helps in scavenging free radicals to their unreactive form thereby reducing the need for synthetic antioxidant such as vitamin C and E.

From our research at Winfred Thomas Agricultural Research Station, Alabama A&M University in Alabama, we discovered hemp was able to improve antioxidant status of beef calves as well as improved antioxidant enzymes in the animals thereby reducing oxidative stress.

Additionally, cattle fed with hemp exhibited calmer behavior and reduced stress levels, contributing to their welfare.

We also observed positive impacts on rumen health, as the animals displayed optimal rumination behavior which supports efficient digestion and nutrient absorption.

The use of hemp in cattle feed can enhance animal health and welfare, it also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

By promoting healthier livestock and providing high-quality, sustainably produced food, hemp can contribute to a more sustainable and humane agricultural system for both animals and humans.
