Trinity varsity admits freshmen via virtual matriculation
Trinity University, Lagos has admitted 74 new students for the 2019/2020 academic session through virtual matriculation.
The ceremony, which was the second to be conducted since its inception in May, 2019, was streamed live on various social media platforms from her city campus Yaba, Lagos, with the students and guests connected through an online meeting platform.
Pro-Chancellor and chairman of governing council, Samuel Olatunji, stressed the need for learners to be equipped with the skills and attitudes that bestow the necessary competencies.
Such competencies, he added must bring healings and solutions to problems, be it physical, economic or psychological.
“Our educational system needs to be reinvented in curriculum, instruction and assessment to be strong in the virtues of community responsibility and compassion in our increasingly individualistic and selfish world and that one person’s progress ought not to be at another’s expense,” he said.
Director of academic planning, National Universities Commission (NUC), Abuja, Dr. Noel B. Saliu, who delivered the matriculation lecture, themed “Instituting the culture of excellence in teaching and research in the Nigerian university system,” said to achieve excellence in teaching, a number of elements are critical.
He listed the elements to include constant review of the curriculum, availability of qualified teaching staff, maintenance of adequate teacher -student ratio (TSR), deployment of modern methods of teaching, capacity building in teaching, including mentoring of younger academics by the older ones, adequate facilities and infrastructure, and minimising academic ‘moonlighting’ to a manageable level.
He further advised that captains of industries should be regularly engaged, so as to teach relevant aspects of the curriculum to learners.
Vice chancellor of the institution, Prof. Charles K. Ayo, on his part noted that to produce globally competitive graduates, change is required, not only in the teaching method, but in other facets of life.
“Thus, the university employs lecturers with industry experience who can relate theory to practice to engender better understanding, innovation and creativity,” he said.
The vice chancellor added that the university’s teaching pedagogy engages: problem-based learning, research-informed learning as well as critical thinking, innovation and creativity.
