In response to the ongoing economic crisis in Nigeria, which has left many struggling to afford basic necessities, Refuge Network International (RNI), a United Kingdom based non-governmental organisation (NGO) led by a Nigerian, has launched a unique approach to food distribution aimed at reaching the poorest communities while ensuring safety and dignity.

Operating through its Nigerian chapter, Refuge Charitable Network, the organisation’s Co-country Director, Mr. Godfrey Ovie Gimoh, emphasized the urgency of their mission. “At a time when countless families are unable to afford food and basic supplies, our goal is to ensure access to these essential resources, along with education, healthcare, and an adequate standard of living for underserved communities,” Gimoh stated.

Recognising the dangers associated with large gatherings during charity events, such as stampedes and loss of lives, Refuge Network International implemented a strategy to distribute food items in a more controlled and efficient manner. Beneficiaries were carefully selected through a pre-registration process and issued cards to redeem their food relief packages.

The programme, which grouped beneficiaries into manageable batches of 150, commenced with the first group being served without any incidents. Volunteers visited recipients personally, either at their homes or designated pickup points. This direct and organised approach eliminated the risks associated with overcrowding.

“We would like to encourage other NGOs and groups intending to distribute similar items to adopt this innovative method,” Mr. Charles Gimoh said. “It ensures safety, dignity, and efficiency in serving the poor in our communities.”

The NGO announced that the next batch of beneficiaries will receive their aid next month, as the organisation continues its commitment to addressing the needs of vulnerable Nigeria’s through empowerment initiatives.
