In recognition of her exceptional contributions to Nigeria’s economy and her global influence in economic policy. Dr. Iyabo Masha was conferred with the prestigious Distinguished Fellow Award. As History was made at the 66th Annual Conference of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES) in Abuja, FTC Nigeria.
The conference with the Theme “Practical Pathways for Nigeria and Africa’s Economic Transformation,” drew industry leaders, policymakers, academics, and students from across Nigeria and beyond. It served as a vibrant platform for dialogue, research sharing, and actionable insights on Africa’s economic future.
Dr. Masha, a woman of impact, currently the Director of the Intergovernmental Group of Twenty-Four (G-24) on International Monetary Affairs and Development, has built a trailblazing career spanning the Central Bank of Nigeria, the International Monetary Fund, and the Presidential Economic Advisory Council.
Her works from stabilizing fragile economies and shaping global trade and debt relief policies, to guiding Nigeria’s fiscal reforms, her impact is felt both locally and internationally.
Reacting to the award, she expressed gratitude to the NES, dedicating the honour to young Nigerian economists and women in leadership. “This award is a reminder that economics is not just about figures, but about people -their lives, dignity, and opportunities,” she said.
Outgoing NES President, Prof. Adeola Adenikinju, congratulated the awardees for their immense contributions, praising them as role models whose achievements reflect the Society’s mission of connecting scholarship to nation building.
It was remarkable recognition with other distinguished awardees at the conference included Vice President Kashim Shettima, CBN Governor Yemi Cardoso, and renowned economist Bismark Rewane.
For Dr. Masha, the recognition cements her reputation as a barrier-breaking woman economist – one whose voice continues to amplify Nigeria’s and Africa’s place in the global economic conversation.
Prof. Adenikinju described by others as “a rare breed academic,” He was lauded for invigorating the Society, expanding its State Chapters across the six geopolitical zones, and strengthening engagement with policymakers. Stakeholders commended his impactful tenure and expressed optimism about building on his legacy as new leadership takes over.
