Temi Adeniyan is a rising talent in Information Security and IT Auditing. With a solid education, practical experience, and a love for cybersecurity, she has built a reputation in this industry. With a first degree in English and Literary Studies from Adekunle University, her growing interest in cybersecurity took her to the United States, where she is now working on a Masters in Cybersecurity and Networks at the University of New Haven. Having worked at Venture Garden Group, First Bank, she returned to the US in 2023 to work as an Information Technology Risk Analyst at Avant LLC in Chicago and is currently at Shure Incorporated in Niles, Illinois. A leader and mentor, she raises awareness for SDGs and inspires and guides young girls in cybersecurity. Boasting several local and international certifications and technical skills, she talks about the importance of cybersecurity in today’s world and mentoring the next generation of female cybersecurity experts.

Switching from English and Literary Studies to cybersecurity is quite a pivot, what informed this?

It might seem unusual but it was a natural progression for me. After earning my bachelor’s degree, I began working as an IT Operations Officer at Venture Garden Group and the experience honed my technical skills and highlighted the critical importance of cybersecurity. My journey into cybersecurity was driven by a desire to make a tangible impact in a field that is increasingly vital to our digital world as shown by recent events. The challenge of protecting sensitive information and ensuring IT system security intrigued me, and I realised that cybersecurity involves both technical and human elements. This interdisciplinary nature appealed to my background in English, where critical thinking and communication are key.

You have worked across several industries to date, take us through your career journey, how has it been?
My journey has been diverse and enriching, providing me experience across the different industries. After I left Venture Garden Group, my role expanded further at First Bank Nigeria as an IT Auditor where I perfected my skills in identifying risks, evaluating controls and ensuring data security. Driven by my passion and yearning for knowledge, I started my Master’s degree in Cybersecurity and Networks at the University of New Haven, where I have learned about computer security, network security, ethical hacking, network enterprise design, Windows administration, AI, and cybersecurity.

I worked at Avant LLC and later, Shure Incorporated in the USA, focusing on IT risk management and audit projects. These experiences solidified my expertise in cybersecurity, risk management and compliance, preparing me for more advanced roles in the industry. My journey has been marked by continuous learning, adaptability and a passion for ensuring robust information security.

This industry can be tough and very cutthroat, how are you navigating and staying ahead with all the challenges?
It requires a combination of continuous learning, adaptability and strategic thinking. My approach to overcoming challenges involves prioritising continuous education and skills development. My formal education is complemented by certifications like Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity, which keep me updated with industry standards and best practices. Secondly, I leverage my experience across different roles and industries to stay adaptable and versatile. My exposure allows me approach challenges from multiple perspectives, making me more resilient and innovative in problem-solving. Finally, I maintain a solid professional network and seek mentorship and collaboration opportunities. By being an active member of cybersecurity communities and mentoring others through the CyberSafe Foundation, I stay connected with industry trends, share knowledge and gain insights from others.

What would you say are some of your key accomplishments in this industry so far?
Being a cybersecurity auditor is a significant achievement, as it involves being part of the critical effort to reduce threats and ensure robust cyber protection and awareness. Speaking at the Cybersecurity Africa Summit in 2022 was a notable milestone for me, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have made impact. One of my proudest accomplishments is my work with the CyberSafe Foundation, where I volunteer to mentor girls across Africa. Through these mentorship programs, I provide career guidance and help young girls start their IT careers. This experience has been incredibly fulfilling, as I’ve had the chance to inspire and equip the next generation of female cybersecurity professionals. This initiative is essential for increasing diversity and inclusion in the field. My continuous contribution to the industry is driven by passion, and I truly love what I do.

As a leader and mentor for others, tell us some of the ways you are mentoring younger people looking up to you?
First, through the CyberSafe Foundation, where I engage in one-on-one mentorship programs. These sessions are designed to help mentees navigate career paths, set ambitious goals and develop the necessary skills to excel in IT and cybersecurity. Also, I organise and lead career guidance workshops that provide insights into diverse opportunities within cybersecurity. These workshops cover aspects such as resume building, interview preparation and essential industry skills. Networking plays a vital role as well. I leverage my professional network to introduce mentees to industry experts, invite them to key events and encourage participation in cybersecurity forums and conferences. Building these connections not only fosters their professional growth but also opens doors to collaboration and career advancement opportunities. Motivation and encouragement are fundamental aspects of my mentoring approach, I believe in empowering mentees to pursue their aspirations with confidence.

You say you raise awareness for SDGs, in what way(s) are you doing this and what are some of the things you’ve done in this regard?
I’m committed to promoting sustainable development goals through various avenues such as integrating cybersecurity into the pursuit of Sustainable Development Goal 9. Through campaigns and outreach activities, I emphasise how cybersecurity measures contribute to sustainable digital practices. Additionally, I run a LinkedIn series called “Auditor’s Note,” where I educate aspiring IT auditors on cybersecurity best practices and stress the importance of digital security in achieving sustainable goals. I’ve also had the privilege of speaking at that Cybersecurity Summit on the topic of “Journey to Zero Trust,” where I discussed critical strategies in cybersecurity that align with sustainable practices.

This is a rapidly changing industry, how do you manage to keep up-to-date with the latest advancements in cybersecurity, and what resources do you rely on for continuous learning?
I prioritise continuous learning by pursuing certifications like CISA and maintaining memberships in industry organisations that provide ongoing education and updates. Engaging with peers and experts at conferences, forums, and online communities also allows me exchange insights and keep abreast of emerging trends. I make it a habit to read cybersecurity materials regularly to stay informed on new threats, technologies and best practices. Participating in webinars, workshops and courses helps deepen my knowledge and acquire new skills that are relevant to current cybersecurity challenges. Staying in touch with cybersecurity solution providers ensures I understand the latest tools and technologies available to effectively mitigate risks. Finally, I apply what I learn in practical ways; this is crucial for understanding and adapting to the constant changes in cybersecurity.

Women are still critically underrepresented in this sector, what are some of the best ways to improve women representation here?
First, we need to start early by encouraging more girls and young women pursue STEM education. By nurturing their interest in these fields from a young age, we can build a stronger pipeline of future cybersecurity professionals. Mentorship plays a pivotal role too. Pairing aspiring female cybersecurity professionals with experienced mentors can provide invaluable guidance and support as they navigate their careers. Companies should also foster environments that not only welcome but actively support women, offering opportunities for advancement and promoting work-life balance. Visibility matters too. We must showcase successful women leaders in cybersecurity and demonstrate that this field is for everyone. Addressing unconscious bias is another critical step. By educating about and actively combating biases in hiring, promotion and workplace dynamics, we can create fairer opportunities for women in cybersecurity. Networking and community-building initiatives are also vital. Establishing networks where women can connect, share experiences, and support each other can help foster a sense of belonging and professional growth. Lastly, providing clear career paths and educational resources specific to cybersecurity can help women navigate and thrive in this field.

What keeps you motivated during difficult times?
Maintaining motivation is crucial and my passion for safeguarding data and systems serve as a constant source of inspiration through difficult times. Also, reflecting on past successes and my drive for positive change keeps me motivated and focused. My support network is invaluable and their encouragement and advice give me strength and valuable perspectives during tough times. Truthfully, I see challenges as opportunities for learning and personal growth. Each obstacle presents a chance to enhance my skills and knowledge, which further motivates me to overcome adversity. Setting clear goals and breaking them down into manageable steps helps me maintain focus and track progress, even in the face of setbacks. Lastly, prioritising self-care through exercise and relaxation ensures I sustain resilience and mental well-being.

Take us through a typical day in your life?
My day typically begins with prayer. Afterward, I dive into keeping up with cybersecurity trends then move on to my to-do list which helps me prioritise tasks and set clear goals. A significant portion of my day is dedicated to project work, which includes conducting audits, analysing security protocols or collaborating with colleagues to mitigate IT risks effectively. Writing articles and sharing insights on LinkedIn is also part of my routine which focuses on cybersecurity education, offering guidance on best practices, emerging threats, and industry trends. Throughout the day, I make time for continuous learning by attending webinars, reading industry publications or researching new technologies and methodologies in cybersecurity. Networking is also another important aspect of my day either through virtual meetings, industry events, or professional forums, connecting with peers and experts helps me stay informed and build valuable relationships in the community. In the evening, I spend time with my family which is essential for maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

What would you most like to be remembered for at the end of the day?
My impact—both in cybersecurity and the lives I’ve touched. I aspire to leave a lasting legacy of positive change and be recognised as one of the most influential and successful cybersecurity female auditors in the industry. Whether it’s enhancing digital security practices, empowering the next generation of cybersecurity professionals or contributing to broader initiatives that promote inclusivity and innovation in technology, I aim to make a meaningful difference. My goal is to create a safer and more resilient digital future while inspiring others, especially women, to excel in cybersecurity and leave their mark on the industry.
