In an effort to address the growing issue of sexual abuse in society, the non-governmental organization, Lady Gardener, has initiated an educational campaign targeting secondary school students in Lagos State. The organization, committed to creating a society free from all forms of sexual assault, has been actively working to raise awareness and provide students with the knowledge and tools needed to prevent such incidents.

The need for this sensitization campaign was driven by alarming statistics on sexual violence among children. According to UNICEF, one in four girls and one in ten boys experience sexual violence before the age of 18. The report also highlights that nearly 60% of Nigerian children under 18 years face some form of physical, emotional, or sexual violence, with many never reporting these incidents. These disturbing figures underscored the importance of Lady Gardener’s mission to educate young people on the dangers and prevention of sexual abuse.

To kick off the campaign, The Lady Gardener visited the students of Eva Adelaja Junior and Senior Secondary School in Bariga and St.Lukes Junior Grammar School.

During the program, students and teachers were educated on the various forms of sexual abuse, how to recognize potential threats and the importance of consent.

Students were also enlightened on the role bystanders can play in enhancing or curbing sexual abuse, whilst noting the importance of speaking out against such violence and also seeking help.

The organization emphasized the significance of creating safe environments in schools where students feel empowered to report any form of abuse.

The founder of The Lady Gardener, Zainab Omotoke Olowu reminded the students on the power they have over their bodies. The co-founder Toluwalase Makinde also told the students to always believe in themselves.
They both expressed their commitment to expanding this initiative across more schools in Lagos and beyond believing that by equipping students with the right information and support, the rate of sexual assault can be significantly reduced, ultimately fostering a safer society for all.
