Kano Hisbah Board probes staff over LGBTQ activities

•Group lauds Kaduna gov’s stance on same-sex union

Kano State Hisbah Board has constituted a panel of inquiry to investigate promotion of rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgenderand Queer (LGBTQ) levelled against a staff, Idris Ahmad Gama.

The middle-level employee attached to the health unit, was reported to have advocated inclusion and equal rights of all individuals while representing the board at a workshop organised by Women Initiative for Sustainable Empowerment and Equality (WISE) about two years ago.

Gama’s supposed comment, which tilted against violation of human rights, resurfaced at a time the state government directed the board to flush out groups or individuals promoting LGBTQ rights in the state.

Commander-General of Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, disclosed this in Kano, while briefing journalists on government’s position against any group or association promoting LGBTQ activities.

He warned that the state would not endorse any agreement or association that contravenes Sharia and relevant laws of the land that prohibit same-sex marriage.

The Hisbah boss confirmed that a panel was raised to investigate a staff member, whose video went viral on social media supporting a group suspected of promoting LGBTQ in the state.

The Commander-General urged the public, religious and traditional leaders, media and all relevant stakeholders to join the fight against immorality in the state.

Although, Daurawa explained that the accused staff denied being a member of any group or association advocating LGBTQ rights, he confirmed that he was only invited to a workshop organised by WISE where women empowerment and human rights were discussed.

The Commissioner for Information, Baba Halilu Dantiye, on Monday, said the governor had ordered a crackdown on all groups promoting LGBTQ activities in the state.

According to the commissioner, WISE’s actitivities were a complete breach of the state’s moral standards and a violation of the Shari’ah law.

IN a related development, the Southern Kaduna People’s Union (SOKAPU) has applauded Governor Uba Sani for rejecting same-sex clause allegedly contained in the Samoa Agreement.

The group said the commendation was necessary against the background that the recently signed pact by President Bola Tinubu, with a “clause on gender equality” had generated mixed reactions among Nigerians.

In a statement issued and signed yesterday by its National President, Samuel Tabara, the group described the “position of the Kaduna State Governor, against the immoral and ungodly LBGTQ clause as heroic, humane and worthy of support and praise by all God-fearing Nigerians.”

Tabara said: “The purported clause allegedly contained in the Samoa Agreement is condemnable and should be rejected by the citizenry. The administrations of former Presidents, Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari, had rejected the proposal in view of its social and moral implications on the nation’s fabrics of life.”
