Plans to hold solidarity walk for Sanwo-Olu Aug 1-10

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Lagos State chapter, has distanced itself from the planned nationwide protests, directing it members to rather join its planned solidarity walk in the interest of continued stability, and peace in Lagos.

The students, however, called for constructive dialogue with governments in achieving collective goals. The NANS made the declaration, yesterday, during a media briefing in Ikeja after a joint meeting with students’ leaders across tertiary institutions in Lagos.

The student leaders said that there was no reason for them to partake in the protests, adding that the state government has been committed to the students’ concern as well prioritising education at all levels in the state.

The students, while emphasising the reason for the solidarity walk, in a communiqué signed by NANS Chairman, Lagos chapter, Alimi Lekan; National President, National Association of Lagos State Students (NULASS), Hafiz Olufowobi; National Association of University Students, Lagos chapter, Miracle Yemoh; National Female Students Association of Nigeria, Ekundayo Titilayo, and Assistant General Secretary South West, National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), Yakub Zainab, said that the walk was to express appreciation for government’s efforts and commitment to a brighter future for Lagos.

The communiqué added: “As a demonstration of our support for the Lagos State Government and our commitment to peace and stability, we will hold a solidarity walk in support of the government. We plan to hold this walk from August 1 to 10, 2024, coinciding with the proposed dates of the planned protests by some unknown individuals. We will not let the voices of discord and destruction affect the message of unity and progress.”

In his remarks, Idris noted that while there are frustrations and challenges faced by many, the populace should hope for a better outcome from the various advancement and opportunities that have been provided to cushion the economic effect.

He said: “In these trying times, it is crucial that we remember the importance of stability, peace, and constructive dialogue in achieving our collective goals. With the significant contributions and the progresswe have witnessed, we strongly state that we are not in support of any protest against the government of Lagos State.

“We cannot afford to let the destructive events of the past, such as the #EndSARS protests, repeat themselves. Our priority is to defend and preserve the peace and prosperity of Lagos. We urge all students to channel their energies into constructive dialogue and positive action, such as volunteering for community development projects, participating in student-government initiatives and engaging in academic and extracurricular activities that promote excellence.”

He, however, expressed optimism that with time, patience and continued collaboration with the government, there would be further improvements and solutions to the issues facing the people.
