Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, is an essential nutrient that plays a crucial role in various bodily functions. It is vital for the production of red blood cells, the maintenance of nerve cells, and the proper functioning of the brain and spinal cord.

A deficiency in Vitamin B12 can lead to a range of health problems. For some, we may think it’s because of stress or lack of sleep, but looking closely, you’ll realise it’s more than that.

1. Fatigue and Weakness

One of the most common symptoms of Vitamin B12 deficiency is persistent fatigue and weakness. This is because Vitamin B12 is essential for the production of red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout the body. When there is a deficiency, the body produces fewer red blood cells, leading to reduced oxygen delivery to tissues and organs, resulting in fatigue and weakness.

2. Pale Skin and Yellowing of the Eyes

A deficiency in Vitamin B12 can also cause the skin to become pale and the eyes to turn yellow. This is due to the build-up of bilirubin, a yellow pigment produced when red blood cells are broken down. When the body is unable to produce enough red blood cells, bilirubin levels can rise, leading to jaundice.

3. Numbness and Tingling in the Hands and Feet

Vitamin B12 is also important for the health of the nervous system. A deficiency can lead to damage to the myelin sheath, the protective covering of nerve fibres. This can cause numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hands and feet. In severe cases, it can also lead to balance problems and difficulty walking.

4. Sore Tongue and Mouth Ulcers

A sore tongue and mouth ulcers are also common symptoms of Vitamin B12 deficiency. This is because Vitamin B12 is involved in the maintenance of healthy tissues in the mouth and digestive tract. A deficiency can lead to inflammation and damage to these tissues, resulting in soreness and ulcers.

5. Cognitive Problems
