According to UNICEF, this year’s theme is “Girls’ vision for the future.”

Here are five essential pieces of advice every parent should impart to their daughter today, inspired by UNICEF’s message for International Day of the Girl Child 2024:

1. Your voice matters, speak up
Encourage your daughter to express her thoughts and ideas with confidence, reminding her that her voice is powerful. As UNICEF notes, “girls are not only courageous in the face of challenges but also hopeful for the future.” Let her know that her opinions and actions can make a difference in her community and beyond.

2. Education is your key to the future
Emphasise the importance of education as a pathway to achieving her dreams. UNICEF has shown that “almost double the number of adolescent girls compared to boys are not in education, employment, or training.” Remind her that learning opens doors, and no matter the obstacles, her education is crucial.

3. You deserve respect and protection
Empower your daughter by affirming that she deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. According to UNICEF, “nearly one in four partnered adolescent girls have experienced abuse.” Let her know that no one has the right to harm her, and she should always seek help if she feels unsafe.

4. Your health is a priority, take care of yourself
Discuss the importance of her health, both physical and mental. UNICEF highlights that “one in three adolescent girls suffer from anaemia, a form of malnutrition,” emphasising the need for proper nutrition and self-care. Encourage her to prioritise her well-being and seek help when needed.

5. Dream big, your potential is limitless
Remind your daughter that her potential knows no bounds. As UNICEF says, “with the right support, resources, and opportunities, the potential of the world’s more than 1.1 billion girls is limitless.” Encourage her to dream big, pursue her passions, and never doubt her ability to achieve greatness.
