Afro-soul star Ayola returns with new album ‘The Life I Want’

Afro-soul singer and songwriter Ayola is making a grand return to the music scene with the release of his highly anticipated second album, The Life I Want. Set to drop this Friday, the album promises a collection of seven tracks, all recorded between Canada and Nigeria.

Ayola, born Abdullah Abubakre, has once again showcased his cross-continental artistry with this project, blending the vibrant rhythms of his Nigerian roots with his experiences abroad.

The Canada-based artist gave fans a sneak peek earlier this week, unveiling the album cover and tracklist on his social media platforms.

Not only is the release of The Life I Want a significant moment for Ayola, but it also coincides with another career milestone—his first-ever musical show. The event will take place this Friday at Kairus Hub in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, giving fans a chance to experience his soulful sound live.

In a heartfelt message, Ayola shared the inspiration behind his new album. “I took a little break after my debut album CtillD to reflect on my artistic desires. The Life I Want was written and recorded during a transitory time. It’s a journey and an implicit story, and I am thrilled to share it with you,” he wrote.

A Journey from Ilorin to the Global Stage

Originally from Osun State but raised in Ilorin, Kwara State, Ayola grew up with music as an integral part of his life. He often sang at home, and the nostalgic tunes of King Sunny Ade were a constant companion on road trips with his father. This early exposure to classic Nigerian music would later influence his sound, which marries Afro-soul with modern storytelling.

Ayola first made waves in 2020 with his cinematic EP Scum, released under Soul City Music Co-op, a Windsor, Ontario-based artist-owned label.

The EP was an emotional journey that delved into the complexities of modern relationships, earning him a reputation for honesty and vulnerability in his music.

A year later, he followed up with his debut studio album Conversations Till Dawn (CtillD), further cementing his place in the Afro-soul genre.

With The Life I Want, Ayola continues to evolve as an artist, taking listeners on another introspective journey while staying true to his soulful roots. As he prepares to take the stage in Lagos, fans can expect an unforgettable evening filled with heartfelt performances and rich musical storytelling.
