The world is in a state of recovery from several setbacks like the coronavirus pandemic, World War Three, terrorist attacks, protests, the “Japa” syndrome in Nigeria and global unsettlement. A recent survey by InterNations, the world’s largest expat community, has unveiled the top 10 destinations that are attracting the attention of travellers around the world. The results confirm that everyone wants to live in a country where the economy is not only flourishing, but the day-to-day life of an average citizen is safe and not harmful.

Also, with summer just around the corner, people are searching for the right countries to visit for vacations as well. The InterNations survey, which targeted 12,543 expats from 175 nationalities living in 174 countries or territories, provides a comprehensive look at the most popular destinations globally. Expats are people who live outside of their native countries.

The top 10 best places to live in the world in 2024 are:

1. Panama
2. Mexico
3. Indonesia
4. Spain
5. Colombia
6. Thailand
7. Brazil
8. Vietnam
9. Philippines
10. United Arab Emirates (UAE)

Panama’s top position

Climbing the ranks, Panama has secured the top spot as the best place to live in 2024. According to Malte Zeeck, founder of InterNations, “Panama saw a big improvement in the Working Abroad Index, from 30th place in 2023 to 12th place in 2024.”

Furthermore, the country excelled in the Quality of Life index. It had notable progress in the affordability and availability of public transportation, leisure options, and healthcare. These are all basic essential things that people want at their beck and call.

Also, it is quite easy to find accommodation and obtain visas in Panama. With a significant portion of its community being retired, Panama also ranks well for work-life balance and reasonable working hours, making it an attractive destination for both retirees and working professionals.

Mexico

Holding onto its well-known appeal as a top travel destination, Mexico has secured the second position in the 2024 rankings. 89% of the people in the survey expressed happiness with their life in Mexico. This is significantly higher than the global average. One French expat said, “Mexico is a beautiful and very varied country, with nice, warm people. I like the history and culture, it’s a balance of traditions and modernism.”

Additionally, the friendliness of the Mexican people and the ease of settling in are key factors that continue to make Mexico a top choice. An impressive 86% of people rate the general friendliness of the population positively, and 85% feel welcome.

Other destinations that are on the rise

While popular destinations like Spain and the UAE maintain their appeal, the list also features several emerging destinations that are gaining more popularity.

Indonesia, for instance, has risen to the third position, with people appreciating the low cost of living, friendly locals, and excellent work-life balance. As a U.S. citizen remarked, “It definitely takes less money to live comfortably here.”

Similarly, countries like Vietnam, the Philippines, and Colombia have all made notable strides in attracting people worldwide. They offer cultural richness, economic stability, and a high quality of life.

As the world becomes interconnected, the search for the perfect place to live or visit has never been more exciting and interesting.
