Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Damini Ogulu, aka Burna Boy, has said that he created the genre of Afrofusion because he did not want to be boxed into the popular West African genre, afrobeats.

In an interview with American media outlet Complex, Burna Boy said that he felt that afrobeats was becoming too limiting and that he wanted to create a genre that was more experimental and boundary-pushing.

“I didn’t want to be boxed in,” Burna Boy said. “I wanted to be able to make music that was influenced by all different genres, from reggae to dancehall to hip hop. That’s why I created Afrofusion.”

Afrofusion is a genre of music that combines elements of afrobeats, reggae, dancehall, and hip hop. It is characterized by its danceable rhythms, catchy melodies, and socially conscious lyrics.
