Agege bread is a highly reverend street food enjoyed by many Nigerians. However, despite the popularity of this bread, its history extends far beyond the borders of the nation.

Agege bread was introduced into Lagos by the Brazilians and West Indians, offsprings of freed slaves who moved to the port of Lagos to start a new life, bringing with them their bread-making skills. The first Agege bread bakery was set up by Jamaican immigrant Amos Shackleford right in the city of Ebute Metta.

From there, Agege Bread found its way to the tables of many Lagos homes, growing in popularity and owing its name to the ancient city of Agege, whose history has now been intertwined with the breads. Today, this delicious bread can be made and enjoyed right in your home. Follow this recipe to make some delicious Agege bread right in your home.

Ingredients

  • 500g strong bread flour or strong plain flour
  • 25g butter (substitute with 2tbsp olive/vegetable oil)
  • 40g sugar
  • 7g fast-action dried yeast
  • 280ml warm water
  • 1tsp salt
  • 1 egg for egg wash

Method

  • Dissolve yeast in warm water, making sure to sprinkle some sugar over it and set aside for about 5 minutes.
  • In another bowl, sift the dry ingredients; flour, sugar, salt.
  • Beat some eggs, add milk and whisk in another bowl.
  • Add the 3 mixes together to make a soft dough mixing it with your hand or electric mixer.
  • Once properly mixed, sprinkle some flour on a floured surface and begin kneading. Add the dough to a greased bowl and allow to rise for up to an hour and thirty minutes.
  • Put the risen dough on a floured surface, knead well, and divide into two loaves.
  • Place each loaf in a greased pan, cover it with a kitchen towel and leave to rise for another hour in a warm environment.
  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F for about 10-15 minutes. Place the dough into the oven and leave to bake for about 25-30 minutes.
  • Once done, bring out the bread and brush it with some melted butter to keep it warm.

Serve with a side of your choice.
