The leader of the Christ Apostolic Church’s Good Women Choir, Ibadan, Deborah Fasoyin, has clarified that she did not compose the popular Yoruba song Odun Nlo Sopin.

Fasoyin, 84, disclosed this during a recent interview with journalists.

She said, “We recorded Odun Nlo Sopin in December 1979. I wasn’t the one that composed the song; till today, we don’t know who did. A CAC [choir] in Ibadan used to sing the chorus as a revival song back then. I only added two verses.”

In 2020, the evergreen song was translated into Igbo and Hausa to ensure it was not limited to the Yoruba language alone.

For 44 years, Odun Nlo Sopin has remained a cherished end-of-year anthem, especially in Yoruba-speaking parts of Nigeria.

Speaking in a separate interview, Fasoyin remarked that the song carries a divine, supernatural covering.

“However, it should not have been limited to the Yoruba tribe. Although people of other tribes listen to the song and ‘flow’ with it, that was not enough to make them have a deeper encounter with the power in the song because they did not fully understand the language. That was the reason Berachah Music put together Odun Nlo Sopin ‘Wazobia version’ to extend the blessings to all by translating it into the other two major languages in Nigeria―Hausa and Igbo. The audio and lyrics video of the song have been released,” she added.
