Luckey Jay: Indigenous storyteller redefining Nigerian music

Performing artist and songwriter Lucky Uyi Osarobo, known by his stage name Luckey Jay, has carved out a unique space in Nigeria’s music industry, describing himself as an “indigenous storyteller.”

Drawing inspiration from his environment and personal experiences, Luckey Jay’s music is a reflection of the rich narratives that surround him.

“I’m mostly influenced by the things around me, the environment, people’s stories, and even my own stories. It’s evident in my music that I’m an indigenous storyteller,” he told The Guardian in a recent interview.

Hailing from Edo State, Luckey Jay is not only a musician but also a philanthropist and entrepreneur. His journey began early when he moved to Lagos with his mother and attended United Secondary School in Ikorodu. By the age of 10, Luckey Jay had already discovered his musical talent, channeling his creative energy into writing lyrics and stories, a passion that has continued to define his career.

Despite his early interest in music, Luckey Jay initially struggled with shyness, especially when it came to hearing his own voice through speakers.

“I was a kid with a voice that sounded older than I looked,” he explained, sharing that it took him years to overcome this hurdle.

However, his passion for storytelling never wavered. He diligently wrote song lyrics and fictional stories, influenced by the Yoruba folktales his mother used to share with him, which helped shape his vivid imagination.

In 2023, Luckey Jay finally stepped into the spotlight with the release of his debut single ‘Comfort’, marking the beginning of what promises to be a remarkable career. His music has since resonated with audiences globally, earning him a reputation for his creative artistry, consistency, and the deep connection he shares with his listeners.
