Are you ready for Ramadan? Important dates and fasting guide

The holy month of Ramadan, a period of fasting, deep reflection, and spiritual renewal for Muslims worldwide, is set to commence in a few days.

As one of the most significant months in the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is observed with fasting from dawn to sunset, intensified prayers, and acts of charity.

Muslims across Nigeria and beyond are preparing for the start of Ramadan, which is expected to begin on the evening of Friday, February 28, or Saturday, March 1, 2025, depending on the sighting of the moon. The month-long observance is set to end around Sunday, March 30, 2025, spanning either 29 or 30 days.

Significance of Ramadan

Ramadan is a time when believers seek closeness to Allah through fasting, reciting the Qur’an, engaging in acts of kindness, and avoiding negative habits. From dawn (suhoor) to sunset (iftar), Muslims abstain from eating, drinking, and other physical needs. This sacrifice is meant to teach patience, humility, and gratitude.

Beyond physical restraint, the month encourages self-discipline and a renewed focus on prayer and charity. It is also a time to strengthen family bonds and foster a spirit of generosity, with many people giving to the less privileged.

Laylat Al-Qadr: The Night of Majesty

One of the holiest nights in Islam, Laylat Al-Qadr (Night of Majesty), falls within the last ten nights of Ramadan, particularly on one of the odd-numbered nights. Many Islamic scholars suggest it could be on the 27th night of Ramadan, which is estimated to fall on March 27, 2025. It is believed to be the night when the Qur’an was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and prayers on this night are considered more rewarding than those offered over a thousand months.

Getting Ready for Ramadan

Preparation for Ramadan goes beyond stocking up on food for suhoor and iftar. Spiritual readiness is key. Muslims are encouraged to set personal goals for worship, break bad habits, and increase acts of kindness.

Religious leaders often remind the faithful to make the most of this sacred period. As Ramadan approaches, a cleric recently urged political leaders to lead by example by following the teachings of God and the Prophet.

“Ramadan is a time of purification, both physically and spiritually. It is a time to reflect on our actions and make changes that will bring us closer to Allah,” he said.

Whether fasting begins in February or March, the significance of Ramadan remains unchanged. It is a time for devotion, discipline, and generosity.
