Raises the alarm over social media impostors

The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized over N1.7 trillion worth of tramadol since 2017 to date.

Director General of NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, who disclosed this in Abuja, said that the agency and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have stepped up enforcement to rid the country of falsified and counterfeit medicines and products. 
   
Before her assumption of office, she said the agency was removed from the port for seven years and Nigeria became a haven for substandard food, drugs and medical products. 
   
“At the point when I came in, we were swimming in tramadol as a country as if they wanted to destroy us and for the first six months, I was running after tramadol. We have seized over N1.7 trillion worth of tramadol.  
Most of the containers were labelled as building materials, but with only one building material. The NDLEA stepped up its game and we have stepped up our enforcement,” she said.

The NAFDAC boss stressed that the agency is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that contaminated paediatric cough syrups circulating in the Gambia do not enter the country.  
 
She warned against using her social media accounts such as Facebook and LinkedIn, to ask for money in exchange for employment and other favours, adding that the agency will never request gratification to carry out its mandate.
 
Adeyeye, who also noted that NAFDAC recently seized N1.3billion worth of counterfeit medicines during its last raid, called on Nigerians to help the agency with useful information. 
     
She lamented that Nigeria imports about 70 per cent of the medicines used in the country.
