The North South Power Foundation (NSPF) has provided a 500 KVA transformer as well as electrified Jankasa and adjourning communities in Zumba ward of Shiroro Local Council of Niger State.

Jankasa community, few kilometers away from Shiroro hydro dam, is housing over 600 people, who have been living for over six decades without electricity.

The Head of General Services, North South Power Foundation, Kemi Adekanya, speaking shortly after the inauguration of the electricity project, disclosed that it is the right of every citizen to enjoy electricity, aside it is part of its Corporate Social Responsibility to improve the economy of the host community.

Adekanya noted that the provision of electricity to Jankasa people who are predominantly farmers would fine tune their living conditions, hence the need for the foundation to continuously improve the atmosphere of the people.

She promised that the foundation would extend similar gesture to other communities in the area.

She urged the community to take advantage of the electricity to set up small businesses in order to be self reliant.

The consultant handling the Corporate Social Responsibilities of North South Power Foundation, Hassan Abdullahi, stated that since the foundation took over the operations of the dam, it has designed roadmap on how host communities would be impacted positively in terms of uplifting their livelihoods.

According to Hassan, the emphasis would be more on the provision of electricity, potable water as well as scholarship to indigent children.

“We have done a lot, but this is one, among the many we have done,” Hassan said.

Also speaking, Niger State Commissioner for Transport, Hajiya Hadiza Idris Kuta, expressed delight over the initiative by the foundation, lauding the management for making the dream of Jankasa people a reality.

The commissioner, who is an indigene of Shiroro Local Council, appealed to stakeholders and other corporate organisations to emulate the North South Power Foundation.

She assured that the facility would be utilised for the purpose it was meant.

The Village Head Of Jankasa, Alheri Audu, while appreciating the gesture, disclosed that his people were over whelmed, promising to sensitise the people on the need to guard the facility jealously against vandals.
