Agency alleges move to frustrate bio-methanol plant in Enugu
The Energy Commission of Nigeria, a Federal Government Agency under the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, has alleged moves to frustrate the ongoing construction of the multi-billion naira “Renewed Hope” Bio-Methanol Pilot Plant at Akpugo, in Nkanu West Local Council of Enugu State.
An official of the Commission, Ernest Okeke, told journalists in Enugu, at the weekend, that work stopped at the site following the arrest of some workers by police officials allegedly brought by the local government.
He said the incident took place on Friday, adding that the police allegedly stormed the site in the company of the Council Chairmen of Nkanu East and Nkanu West and arrested the workers.
When contacted, the Chairman of Nkanu West Local Council, John Ogbodo, denied accompanying the police to the site.
“It is not true,” he said, refusing to make further comments. Okeke, however, gave the names of those arrested to include, Ambrose Edeh, Chibuike Edeh, Monday Nwodo, Obinna Samuel, Ebuka Chukwurah, Chibuike Okereke, and Maduabuchi Okoro.
“The police officers also removed batteries of the earth-moving machines at the site to stall construction activities.“The construction workers arrested were detained briefly atRapid Response Squad (RRS), Government House, Enugu, and later moved to Anti Kidnapping section at Independence Layout, Enugu, and around midnight moved to state Criminal Investigation Department (CID),” he said.
