The Government College Old Students Association, (GCOSA) Ojo, Lagos State, on Sunday donated a dialysis machine to the General Hospital, Badagry.
Speaking shortly before unveiling the dialysis machine, the president of the association, Mrs. Atinuke Alex-Oni, said the equipment is a cleanser of dirty blood from the lungs.
“The machine removes dirty blood from your body, filters it through a dialyzer (artificial kidney), and returns the cleaned blood to your body.
“If you don’t have a good cleanser, that dirty blood goes up in your body, and the dirty blood will slowly poison all the organs in your body.
“If a decision has been made for you to be having dialysis, then you should be having dialysis at least three times a week.
“But unfortunately, we don’t have enough machines in Nigeria, it is sad to hear that people are queuing for three days for dialysis,” she said.
The president said that she was happy to see the machine handed over to the management of the general hospital.
Mr. Moye Olumide, Chairman, of the Planning Committee, GCOSA, said the committee had gone into a lot of effort to show that the donation became a reality.
“There were a lot of meeting processes and the likes, getting the ministry to give us approval and getting a lot of things.
“We had to be physically present, but above all, we thank God that all of us are here today, we have all our seniors from abroad for this unveiling.
“We are grateful to the management of the hospital and a big thank you to the Lions Club. You have been very helpful and wonderful, you’ve made a lot of things happen.
“We want to continue having this partnership with you for a long time to come,” he said.
In his remarks, Dr Olatunde Bakare, the Medical Director of the hospital, said he was elated to witness the kind gesture.
According to him, it is a huge service to humanity especially service to the esteem people of Badagry and its environs, the general public and to the Lagos state health sector.
“This edifice we are in was donated by Lion’s Club International. We appreciate the club especially for allowing and accommodating the dialysis center.
“The need for a dialysis center in General Hospital Badagry is long overdue as reported cases of renal impairment are increasing in our society today.
“Neither can we pretend nor can the government turn away from this development.
“The state is putting its best; however, health sector is huge that government alone cannot do it all.
“Hence, at the time of being in dire need of a particular service, your reputable association came into the rescue.
“Having a dialysis center of this standard is a mega project gulping millions of naira,” he said.
Bakare assured the association that the management of the hospital would ensure adequate maintenance of the machine.
“As the custodian, periodic maintenance and regular service review will be prioritized to ensure global standard in the service,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the management of the hospital also inaugurated an eye center built and donated by Lions Club of Nigeria.
