The President of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), Dr Adebisi Osim, has called for improved mentorship schemes for young women in engineering careers, as well as those undergoing skills and entrepreneurship training in the country to create wealth in the economy.

Osim led the call at the inaugural public lecture and launch of a mentorship scheme organised by APWEN, Lagos chapter, in honour of its fourth President, Mrs Idiat Amusu, at the weekend in Lagos. Amusu was the first female agricultural engineering graduate in Nigeria to practice her profession.

Speaking on the theme, ‘Empowering generations through lifelong learning, innovation, and collaboration,’ she explained that such mentorship programmes will provide young women with the guidance, support, and resources they need to succeed in their engineering careers.

Osim emphasised that by empowering the next generation of women engineers, stakeholders can create a more diverse and inclusive engineering profession, adding that the association’s new Mentorship Scheme will nurture the next generation of leaders, equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and invaluable guidance they need to reach new heights.

“This mentorship scheme is a testament to Amusu’s legacy in the engineering profession. I urge you to take full advantage of this mentorship scheme, learn, grow, and contribute to the engineering community.

“Through mentorship and collaboration, we can ensure that engineering continues to shape a brighter, sustainable future for all,” she said.
