Tragedy struck in Ojo, Lagos, on Wednesday when an army officer stabbed a police officer, Saka Ganiyu, to death following a confrontation over a traffic violation.

This marks the third fatal attack on a police officer by soldiers in Lagos within the past three years. The incident occurred at the Volks Bus Stop along Ojo/Iyana-Iba Road when police officers confronted the soldier, who was driving an unregistered commercial vehicle against traffic.

A heated argument ensued, prompting the soldier to call for backup from nearby Ojo Cantonment Barracks. Soldiers arrived at the scene armed with weapons and attacked the police officers. During the altercation, the soldier stabbed Inspector Ganiyu in the neck with a dagger.

Police reinforcements were mobilised to repel the soldiers and Inspector Ganiyu was rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) with serious injuries. He tragically died during treatment.

Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 81 Division, expressed regret over the incident and confirmed that the soldier involved has been apprehended and handed over to the Military Police for investigation and disciplinary action.

He emphasised the army’s commitment to upholding the Nigerian Army Code of Conduct and Rules of Engagement, and offered condolences to the deceased officer’s family and the Nigeria Police Force.
