Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 35-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to address the lingering crises threatening the public university system.

The union’s National Executive Council, which met at the University of Ibadan from August 17 to 18, 2024, had initially given the government a 21-day ultimatum.

Following the government’s failure to respond, ASUU extended the ultimatum by another 14 days, starting from September 23, 2024.In a statement, the Zonal Coordinator of the Port Harcourt Zone, Stanley Ogoun, condemned the government’s insincerity in addressing the issues, stating that following the failure to respond, the union issued a stern warning to the Federal Government on long-standing contention issues.

The latest 35-day ultimatum came as the University of Ibadan chapter of ASUU, yesterday, said the hardship being faced by public university workers was getting unbearable.

The Chairman of the chapter, Prof. Ayoola Akinwole, stated this in a statement to mark the 64th Independence anniversary of Nigeria, titled, “Nigeria at 64: A state in need of deliverance from the leadership of perpetual have-nots”.

He noted that the union had been showing understanding by issuing ultimatums to the Federal Government, while the government had been lackadaisical, adding that another 14-day ultimatum was about to end within which government should meet the demands of the union to preserve the relative peace on public university campuses in the country.
