Final year Mass Communication student of the Ebonyi State University, Chidera Goodness Ajah, is in a race against time to raise N16.1 million for plasmapheresis and kidney transplant.
According to a medical report from St. Nicholas Hospital, Chidera is a hypertensive and end stage renal disease patient, who is on Hemodialysis. She is currently being considered for a renal transplant surgery.
Consultant Transplant Nephrologist, E. L. Bamgboye, said Chidera has been counselled on long term management options and advised that she requires kidney transplantation, which provides the best quality of life survival benefits and significant cost of management advantage over any other modality of management in end stage renal disease.
“She will, however, need to provide a suitable donor.
A suitable kidney donor acceptable in this unit includes a first degree relative (father, mother, sibling or child), though uncles/aunts and cousins are also acceptable.
Emotionally related individuals, spouses of friends may sometimes be accepted, if it can be ascertained that this is being done for altruistic reasons.
“If the patient has been exposed to foreign antigen and has antibodies, she will need to be desensitised through plasmapheresis. The estimated cost of a session of plasmapheresis is N400,000. Patients may require up to four sessions.
The cost of renal transplant in this centre, currently, is N13.5 million. This covers: the cost of donor nephrectomy and actual transplant surgery; post-operative admission for donor and recipient for two week post-transplant; two weeks of standard anti-rejection drugs post-transplant. However, there might be the need to use additional medications which may be billed separately.’’
The renal transplant can be arranged as soon as a suitable donor is identified, preliminary investigations concluded and necessary deposit has been made.
