Govt, NUT reach truce on strike
The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Mr. Monday Igbuya yesterday in Asaba paid glowing tributes to the deceased member of the State House of Assembly, Mrs. Omawumi Udoh who died on December 23 in London after a protracted illness.
Speaking at a valedictory service in honour of Udoh, who represented Warri South 1 Constituency, Igbuya described her as “a woman with mental power, political tact and a huge capacity for self-sacrifice.”
While lauding her concern for the development of the state, he said that the lawmaker was not only influential but also kindhearted and touched so many lives while she was alive.
“She excelled tremendously to the delight of Delta people. She will be remembered for her monumental contributions towards the socio-economic and political stability of the state,” he said.
Igbuya added that Udoh devoted her very successful political career to the service of the people of Delta State, particularly Warri South 1. He urged Deltans to emulate Hon. Udoh’s commitment to peace, development and her spirit of philanthropy.
Meanwhile, the Delta State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has expressed its willingness to suspend the strike embarked upon by public primary and secondary schools in the state.
In a press briefing after a meeting with Governor Ifeanyi Okowa in Warri yesterday, Chairman of NUT, Comrade Jonathan Jemirieyigbe disclosed that the meeting was fruitful and that the strike would be called off within a few days.
“Between now and Monday, we will call off the strike. We had a very fruitful discussion with the governor,” he said.
The NUT leadership described Okowa as labour-friendly governor, saying that it was wrong for a section of the media to portray him in bad light as a result of the strike embarked upon by teachers in the state.
In his response, Okowa expressed hope that the teachers would go back to the classroom. “We had a fruitful meeting and we discussed issues concerning the teachers and how to move our state forward,” he said.
